Head of School
Mrs. McConaghy (Mah-con-ah-gee or “Mrs. M” for short!) joins BASIS Scottsdale Primary after five years at BASIS Scottsdale (5-12) in administration and college counseling. Education administration is her passion – she loves working with teachers, administrators, parents, and students. Creating a sense of community and building trust amongst all groups is a top priority for her. She is looking forward to getting to know your families and instilling the same passion for learning, creativity, and intellectual curiosity in your students as that which is found throughout BASIS students of all ages.
Born and raised in a suburb of Boston, Mrs. McConaghy is an avid Boston sports fan – Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins, and also the New England Patriots! She has two dogs, miniature dachshunds named Bella and Fenway. She is a 10 year resident of Scottsdale, living here with her husband and son, and particularly enjoys the serenity (and warmth) of desert living. Prior to joining BASIS, Mrs. McConaghy earned a Master in Education from Harvard University and a Bachelor of Administration, with a concentration in Economics and Finance, Summa Cum Laude, from Babson College. She has served as a Finance and Operations Manager at CVS /Caremark and has prior financial experience in investment banking.

A Michigan native, Mrs. Kearney attended Central Michigan University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Three Dimensional Design with a minor in Math Education. She lives in Scottsdale with her husband and son (almost two years old).

Director of Student Affairs
Mr. Deshler comes to us after serving as a school Director for BASIS Phoenix and for BASIS Ahwatukee. Prior to that, he was at BASIS Scottsdale for three years where he taught 5th Grade Physical Geography, AP Environmental Science, and AP Human Geography. Before joining BASIS, Mr. Deshler was a Director for a Virginia non-profit educational organization he co-founded in 1994 that focused on inquiry-based science programs for Kindergarten through 12th grade. In 2010 he moved to Tempe, Arizona when his wife joined ASU as an Assistant Professor. Growing up avidly exploring the outdoors in Japan and the Philippines eventually led him to leading natural history tours on horseback in the Appalachian Mountains as a teenager. This sparked his passion for education and a career that spans 28 years and three continents. Mr. Deshler enjoys playing frisbee, hiking, and camping with his dog; reading and watching just about anything Science Fiction; and going on any journey - he intends to go into Outer Space at least once in his lifetime.
